A whoop that got around.
Started up in New Hampshire in 1878. Then migrated. Showed up in the New York Times in 1885. Over at the U. of Illinois ten years later. Then used as a call for the Portland Mountain Club in 1896. And, of course, at some point later on, it worked its way down to Charlottesville, where it has lived ever since. Credited as the old Dartmouth yell in one of their annuals, it edged out the cheer Rah! Rah! Rah! over time. Even though it originates from someplace else, it sure sounds like home if you've spent any time in Virginia. And that's really what counts – it's not who wore it first, but who wore it better.
