The Appalachian Trail was dreamed up by Benton MacKaye in 1921, and by 1937 there was a nearly 2,200 mile footpath connecting people to the mountains and towns dotting the east coast from Georgia to Maine. Or Maine to Georgia, depending on your direction of choice.
The trail offers something increasingly rare: a chance to slow down and to remember that some of the best things can't be rushed. Like letterpress printing, for example.
"I understand now, in a way I never did before, the colossal scale of the world. I found patience and fortitude that I didn't know I had. I discovered an America that millions of people scarcely know exists. I made a friend. I came home.” - Bill Bryson, A Walk in the Woods
