Split land. That’s what Yoknapatawpha means.
But that isn’t what it means. To scores, it means the land of the Snopes family. To a lesser number, it means the Square, the University. To me – a rich, complex, messy, gorgeous land of duality and literature and steamy summers. There the hills yawn until they flatten out just 35 miles west where the delta stretches out to Old Man River.
Faulkner’s postage stamp. Mississippi’s gem. The South’s South.
