1 of 65. That's how the Arkansas flag got its start.
An enterprising designer named Willie (girl named Willie, turns out) entered a design contest. She was from humble beginnings, father was a planter. At the time she submitted it, she was a history teacher. For the same school in the small Arkansas town she grew up in. Had three stars on it. For the three nations to which Arkansas has belonged. It was simple and it was bold and it was hers. A flag from Willie Hocker, for the people.
We know how it ended up. Extra star. Extra words. But I think the original can still hold its own.
