Anchors Aweigh, my boys, Anchors Aweigh
Farewell to college joys, We sail at break of day, 'ay 'ay 'ay
Thou our last night ashore, Anchors Aweigh
Until we meet once more, Here's wishing you a happy voyage home!
- The Naval March
We had two options in high school: figure out how to pay for college or take up the call of duty to join the Navy.
My granddaddy was a sailor. So was my Pops. They’d spent time up on flight decks and down in submarines, crossing the great oceans of this world in search of adventure. And in the name of freedom, I think they both found it. While I chose the bookish route, two of my three brothers opted to enlist and take up that grand call of duty. They are out on the seas right now, protecting and defending unified America. I play the Naval march the night before my brothers deploy, listening to the lyrics – college & service – and I get a swell of pride. They done good.
